Meditation of Father Georges sac (Mt 5, 20-26)

If your justice does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven
What does it mean to be fair?
It is to please God; It is to be acceptable and pleasing to God (Rom 12: 1) by keeping the Law. To be righteous is to be obedient to God like Joseph (Mt 1:19). It is also having faith like Abraham and David (Romans 4: 1-2). Christ Jesus is our Law. He is the Word. We must listen to his Word and put it into practice in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. Unlike the Pharisees and the scribes who cling to the law without love, compassion, we are invited to cling to Christ by faith (John 3:16). It is Christ who is the source of our salvation and not the opposite. It is God who initiates our salvation and not the opposite. The justice of the scribes and the Pharisees consisted in pleasing men only to God who loves us. The love of God is free. Let us not fall into the trap of the scribes and the Pharisees. We can buy neither spiritual graces nor our salvation. Our fasts, our prayers, our penances, our novenas cannot buy divine grace, but widen our pure hearts to welcome grace in abundance. As Christians, we are therefore invited this morning to bitter for free, to serve for free, to give and to give for free, in order to open our hearts to divine reward. St Barnabas, Apostle is a model to follow.
